the state of orissa, in the eastern part of india, is known for its unique temple architecture. the best examples are the many temples in the state capital bhubaneshwar, the jagannath temple in puri (also a popular beach resort), and the sun temple near the beach at konark.more inland, in a relatively less touristic area in the southern part of orissa, live aboriginal tribes that until recently kept very old traditions, unaffected by the brahmin, moslem and modern invations and layers of "mainstream" india. they live in villages and clans, decorate their houses and bodies, and practice shamanism, goddess worship in the form of trees and stones, spirit rites, sorcery and animal (formely also human) sacrifice. here are some pictures from my 10-days tour in orissa, february 2002. they are arranged in several pages. click on the pictures in each page to see a bigger version, in a separate window.
